Rules
Checking your contract before side work
Before adding side work, make sure it fits within your employment contract. Most allow it, but some set conditions.
Clauses to look for
- Outside work: some contracts require notice or permission before taking other paid work.
- Non-compete: working for competitors or the same clients may be restricted.
- Conflict of interest: overlap with your employer's business may need to be declared.
- Company time and equipment: using work devices or working hours for side work is usually forbidden.
- Intellectual property: some contracts claim what you create, especially if it relates to your job.
Asking
Write to HR, describe the side work and when you'd do it, and confirm it won't use company time or equipment. Keep the reply.
Getting advice
If a clause is broad and your side work is close to your profession, talk to an employment lawyer or your union first.
